The American way of being and acting

After several years working in the Brazilian Hospitality Industry and always thinking strategically about the development, learning, growth and investment in my career, I made the decision to come to the United States to consolidate my international experience.

It is worth mentioning here that in my hotel career in Brazil I was for 15 years working in strategic positions in a company run by Americans. In my opinion, having worked with different cultures, including The American, made all the difference in my learning.

What I’m going to tell you now can be a script for those who are in this tune and, for those who are not, serves as an account of what it has been like living in the United States.

Script for those who dream of living in the USA

To be able to write this article with property, since my arrival in the USA, I have already tried to attend a public English school. And why public? Precisely to compare with other institutions and validate methodologies and efficiencies of teaching.

In the first month I attended this school, I could see that it is attended by students from all over the world. There are countless nationalities that seek to learn the language.

This school is maintained by the government and offers free daily English lessons. I classify it as “survival english” for those who have just arrived in the USA and need to learn the language to communicate in a basic way and learn what only the day-to-day experience can show. However, in this school you can arrive without saying anything and go out fluent. It will depend on your dedication.

Native, kind and committed teachers

The school is a spectacle, with extremely dedicated and prepared teachers, mostly natives as they call it. The staff and the coordination are super kind and kind. I was also very well received by all.

In these few days I stayed in school (and I make a point of repeating to be able to write this article), I noticed the seriousness with which the school acts on its mission to teach the language.

I also noticed that many students gave up or were missing many times. American likes the right thing, they are direct and objective and do not have time to get sentimental with student, no matter which country people originate from. Respect always prevails.

 

I often noticed that students did not speak English in the classroom, wanted to speak their language and with that teachers drew attention. “Do you want to speak English or do you want to keep speaking only your language?” they asked.

This attitude pleases me very much, because a teacher in the USA is very respected and students who do not follow this hard routine of studies should retire in the room and give way to another, which is fair and right.

Learning always

After my short experience in this school to understand exactly the dynamics of a public school, I moved to a private school, which I continue to study daily almost 24 hours.

During the coronavirus pandemic, I was busy writing books, articles, actively participating in countless business lives and supporting some investors in this hotel segment.

 

I had the opportunity to pass a course offered by one of the best universities in the USA. During the quarantine, this institution offered thousands of students around the world a course focused on hospitality.


It was another learning opportunity with hotel executives from the USA. In this course much has been said about topics that I will emphasize for you. Many of them I have mentioned in my books and articles, others I seek to add to the career. Here’s the right one.

Another observation I make is that many people who work in the Hotel industry do not have formal training in hospitality. So find out, go after the information, connect with people, have organization and, if you are from the hotel area, pay attention to the details. Respect the company’s culture, have resilience, have a spirit to serve and build a reputation of your own.

In addition, have indicators always at hand, create a career in which strategy, procedures, KPIs, marketing and team of excellence. All these characteristics need to be part of your DNA.

Post-pandemic hospitality

Another item that is now part of the discourse of any and all hoteliers is the adoption of sanitary protocols. And this goes through several aspects, from the care of hygiene and cleanliness itself to the active listening of improvements that can come from your employee and guest.

This crisis caused by coronavirus has shown us that it is necessary to reset the past, start from scratch and deliver the best experience. Nothing will be like before and in one of the articles I write about the pandemic that paralyzed the hospitality.

In addition, the manager needs to give excellent working conditions to his team, making everyone feel important every day. This is an attitude that not all managers have, because they stay inside their aquariums and do not go to the field, where everything happens

You have to change that mindset and be present, along with the team. That’s adopting a high level of excellence, starting with leadership. She’s the mirror of the team.

So, have respect and genuinely love people, relate, motivate your teams, be a problem solver giving freedom so that people can reach you without squeamish.

To the hotel professional and care with the construction of his own brand. Therefore, I suggest always updating your curriculum vitae or resumes networking constantly, connecting with people from your environment and outside it, besides being extremely judicious and careful with your social networks. They talk a lot about what you look like and what you think.

Finally, I want to tell you not to give up your dreams. Happy staff are equal to happy guests which equals the best profitability. Think about your EQUITY. Have a passion for this brilliant profession.
