6 golden rules for you to train yourself in hospitality

The people who accompany me, either through the books I have written, articles I publish periodically, interviews or social networks know a little about my personal and professional life.

In my professional career, I always like to record that I am fascinated by reading and recommend to Brazilians who read. Unfortunately, our Brazil does not have the habit of reading, which in my opinion is regrettable, because it is a rich source of learning as well.

Watch Europeans and Americans, who read 3 to 5 books per month. What about us? Only one book a year and look there… And why am I teasing this in this article? Because it was through reading that I was also able to open my head, expand my knowledge and be able to talk about all possible subjects. Therefore, it is no use just taking courses without dedication, without effort.

Training should also come through reading, being open-minded for new learning. And here I will cite some macro situations of what I believe so that a hotel professional can grow and develop consistently.

Once a waiter, always
waiter
Once maid, always
maid
Once receptionist, always receptionist

Do you see anything wrong with that? Quite the contrary. These are choices we make in our lives, that is, each one chooses the path he wants. In many cases, it is possible that the manager will promote the waiter to become A&B manager and the professional gets frustrated, because what he liked to do most was be a waiter. And it’s okay with that.

However, once you decide to grow and grow transparently without pulling bag, without pulling anyone’s carpet, with humility and a lot of work, you can walk paths to get to high-ranking positions. If you want.

An example: you can start as a waiter and go to general manager. This leads to a way to earn more, have new responsibilities, status, prestige, be recognized as an example of management and so on.

I respect everyone’s choices and decisions. In my case, I chose to get out of that “world” through, of course, the encouragement of my mother, that is, I decided to pay the price to grow, develop and achieve a more dignified life.

If you really aim to grow, then go my guidelines if you want to pay the price and reach a strategic leadership position in 2020.

1. Honesty and a lot of work

I particularly and even from experience do not believe in magical recipes or secrets of success that turn the person overnight into manager. It will be years of great struggle, work and dedication. Be ready for that.

Some people don’t want to grow up and everything’s all right, everyone in yours. In my case, it is natural to seek professional ascension and grow honestly, in a manner and gradually through dedication and meritocracy.

2. Study is fundamental

Study, take a degree and, if possible, emende a post or, in the case of hospitality, take specific courses that involve your area of activity within a hotel environment.

This is critical to your career and especially for you to get to the top consistently. The obvious that we are all already bald to know is that the world is constantly changing, what it requires of us professionals, to be attuned and conducting a deep monitoring of everything that happens in the business world and all other areas that can affect our profession.

I also recommend that you talk to people who know what they are talking about and know what happens around you, are attentive to the phenomena and difficulties of our area and, mainly, how to face them. This is only possible if you study, read, research, attend courses, lectures, conventions. In short, upgrade yourself or the market swallows you.

3. Self-knowledge and self-assessment

In particular, it is essential that you seek a self-assessment to become a great hotelier, recognized and valued.

Seek self-knowledge, because it is necessary to know your style, your profile, your way of acting in companies and especially with people.

It may not seem like it, but it’s important that you get to know each other too. How do I get when I go through a time of great concern, of great stress? You know that old self-knowledge maxim? Yes, this can help you get to a position with more ownership. Look for a methodology that you really believe in and don’t do it for fads or because your friend did.

I say this especially for you to understand from the behavioral area, emotional intelligence, how people expect to receive feedback, how to lead by example, how to know your employee’s behavioral profile to extract maximum potential from it and so on on.

4. Know new cultures and add knowledge

Through a lot of work and surrounded by good people and with a fantastic team, I could always achieve the best results in all the companies I had the opportunity to work.

With this, I was able to travel to most other countries, especially in the United States. In that country, I had contact with new cultures, people and situations. This travel practice will make you grow and learn even more.

Different cultures can help you in many ways, starting with empathy, that is, putting yourself in the place of the other and better understanding your way of thinking and acting, being malleable and respecting the individuality of the other.

Traveling to other places and countries will serve you to expand your existential possibilities. Try to accept the other as it really is and with that create opportunity to learn from it.

People always have something to teach. And hospitality is working with people all over the world, you agree?!

See how much opportunity to add new knowledge you have, whether with staff, but mostly with guests.

And, of course, learning other languages can be a decision-making factor for their growth. Remember that.

5. Deal with ego and evolve

What I speak now is not intended to offend anyone, but we have to deal with a lot of ego in our daily lives. And you know how we get over the ego? Having an open head, always being that empty glass always willing to learn.

One of the characteristics of an open-minded person is to first turn their ego into new learning opportunities and evolve with it.

If necessary, take a step back. That’s not demerit. Quite the contrary. Remember that a good open-minded hotelier is always tuned to the news of the market.

Remember I told you about the readings? Hotelier News, Hotels Magazine, Panrotas, among so many opportunities and possibilities. You are able to get out of the comfort zone, escape the sameness. Break barriers and innovate seeking knowledge always. Knowledge is power.

6. Be a collaborative person anywhere

To be a hotel executive, you need to have gone through other experiences and if you want to be an example, you must be a person who collaborates with others.

And this applies to everything and not just to the hotel, resort or company you work with. Hotelier, good hotelier, excellent hotelier means being a person, a professional who collaborates, who practices empathy, honesty, kindness and, mainly, resilience.

A hotel professional can transform a chaotic environment, in a harmonious environment and very collaborative-oriented.

I wish your year to be of many transformations, evolution and growth. With your dedication, I know it will be!
