Do you know how to answer which job makes a difference in the hospitality industry? And that goes for other segments as well. I often reflect on that. I have participated in several events on hospitality and I note that few have been able to answer this question.
But over more than two decades in the sector, this experience already allows me to glimpse that one of the most important factors (if not the most important) in working in hospitality is to make the life of the other better, that is, to have dedication to people. And when we talk about hospitality, this universe is huge to meet. We have from our own colleagues from industry and other areas, managers, supervisors, outsourced and of course guests.
And in this world called people management, some questions come from professionals, which I will try to elucidate so that the way of facing the work changes. I hope that the mental model of those who work in hospitality – and even in the market in general – can be transformed from these reflections.
I dedicate myself so much and I’m not recognized
What usually happens is that we are used to being average, mediocre, within the meaning of the word. According to the dictionary, the word mediocre or median, which are synonymous, “which is neither good nor bad, medium”. And many professionals conform to be average, when what the market seeks are exceptional professionals, those out of the curve, the excellent. In this school of life, which is the corporate market, it is not enough to take the average to pass the year. It takes more: more dedication, more work, more sweat, more overcoming.
So, the lesson remains: perform your work with excellence and you will be considered a good collaborator. And from there you will probably grow and have greater visibility in your area of expertise. But as long as you have the courage to take risks, take paths that exceed the expectations of the organization and its leaders. Dare more, be much more dedicated and take risks.
Question for your reflection: what are you doing differently for the company or manager to notice and value your presence in the corporation?
It’s been several years and I want to give up
I notice that many professionals want quick results. I’m sorry to disappoint anyone who thinks so, but no great manager or leader has come where he is with a magic pass. Who really wants to win in the career, regardless of what area it is, needs to have focus, discipline, dedication and make choices that are not always positive. Want to grow up in the hospitality? You’re going to have to sacrifice the weekend. Want to be a great chef? Christmas and New Year is the great opportunity to learn or spend as a family. You have opportunities every day to learn and develop in the profession. What we can’t do is cower and hide behind our badges.
Question for your reflection: The choice is yours. And the result too.
I’m too old for that.
This speech is no longer good for the present day. We are living longer, medicine has advanced, and with that, it is very likely that our organizations will have more senior professionals with young minds. So keep the spirit young and innovative to propose ideas, deliver beyond what you promised. You have a capacity, brilliant potential, but it may be that your insecurity impedes your vision.
You need to see possibilities in everything in life. With this, you can overcome obstacles, overcome your limits. Have attitudes and risk, seek to develop every day and have consistency to get the best results.
Question for your reflection: Never give up. Study, evaluate, think.
Focus on accomplishing your best, not your average. Deliver more than you’ve been asked to deliver. Present solutions more than take problems. Become this professional consistently, 365 days a year, with discipline and focus, escaping procrastination and behind-the-scenes conversations that don’t take the good professional to the top. And be happy in what you accomplish. Whoever’s around you is sure to notice.
