Hotel Day: profession for those who have the ability to get out of the comfort zone

Nilson Bernal, CEO of Termas de Jurema Resort Hotel

The hotel profession is the dream of many people with whom I come across in lectures, events and even on a daily basis. If you really want to work in the area, I need to say that the career requires a person with a differentiated profile.

This is because it is not everyone who is willing to work from Monday to Second, 24 hours connected to the business and routine that often requires us to change priorities. Therefore, before launching into prospecting in the hotel sector, try to ask yourself if you have this behavioral profile. And it’s okay if you don’t.

I have always been workholic by nature and the work has always been in my essence. The word work fascinates me, because working has provided me with a dignified life and hospitality is a profession that I consider noble, commendable, a source of obligations and pleasure as well.

Therefore, a good professional breathes hospitality 365 days a year and puts his hand in the dough, that is, does not manage behind the table, but goes to the field. Closed and locked management in the room does not work. The hotelier is always required to be close to the employees, observing, monitoring, monitoring, helping, directing, training, valuing effectively and efficiently.

Another point for you to question about your profile is about routine. If you value it very much, maybe hospitality isn’t your area. In the sector, there is no routine, because we work to solve problems, overcome obstacles that arise along the way and demand solutions. Although there is planning, the priorities end up alternating and this happens in all other businesses.

And speaking of planning, the real hotel leader also has complete clarity about what he needs to do. He has macrostrategic vision and has the hotel in his hands. This means that you know revenues, expenses, variations, average daily and all indicators to check which way the hotel is going. And chart new routes if necessary. It’s that maxim: if you don’t know where to go, any path will do.

Being a hotelier and not working on weekends doesn’t exist.
You have to be aware that as long as the world is going on out there,
you’ll be at the hotel, taking care of people, guests.
That’s getting out of your comfort zone all the time.
Are you willing to do that?

If you want to be a hotelier and don’t want to work on weekends, forget it. That doesn’t exist in hospitality. It is on weekends that we usually need to have our presence. Working standing 8, 10, 12 hours a day, spending Christmas and New Year’s Eve hotel is a choice where you are pursuing your profession, building your career in the hotel where you chose to act. You must be aware that while the world is going on outside, you will be in the hotel, taking care of guests. That’s getting out of your comfort zone all the time. Are you willing to do that?

Make your choice and whenever we do them, the price is high for those who did not actually choose to be hotelier in essence. I’m sure you want to become always better at your profession. However, if you do not have the ability to compete in essence and do not have consistency in the provision of services, seek another profession, because the market will swallow you. And by the time you figure it out, it’s going to be too late.

If, in fact, you are the best in your area of expertise and position yourself as someone competitive, you will surely win, no matter if your hotel is the most expensive in the city. Be a quality fanatic, deliver the best result assisted by people focused on the basic principles of hospitality. If you are excellent at the basics, you will surprise your guest.

So, what’s your choice?
